After the war began the firm of H.E. Arnhold was

started. H.E. Arnhold is a Briton, and the firm of Arnhold Karberg in London is British. Nevertheless the connection between the British H.E.

Arnhold and the German Arnhold Karberg of China has been very intimate, as is evidenced by the following facts:-

the 2 firms occupy the same premises in Canton; they use the same shipping marks in trading

(v. name of the Consul General Canton);

I understand that the G.5.0, have evidence that H.E. Arnhold's capital is still in Arnhold Karberg's Eastern branches, If this is so, it seems to me conclusive proof that the 2 firme are not separate, and therefore competing, houses; otherwise H.E. Arnhold, by doing the same line of business with the Eastern Arnhold Karberg's old clients, would be cutting his own

throat.

(a) The French authorities refuse to be persuaded

as to the independent existence, and refuse to

carry British H.E. Arnhold goods.
